Roundup: Stylish Cruiser Bikes & Accessories

Why talk about bikes? Because I like ALL cute things... including cute bicycles!

Especially cute bicycles that can take me five miles to pick up pizza. Who needs a delivery person when you have a bike? No need to feel guilty about eating pizza– you just got a workout picking it up.

Here's the back story on how we came to be bike owners all of the sudden:

A couple weeks ago the husband got it into his head that he wanted a bike. Not just any bike, but a hard core triathlon-style road bike with the extremely skinny wheels that can go really fast and really far. I blame his brother, who has recently gotten into cycling.

Do you have any idea how much those fancy road bikes can cost? I was in for a rude awakening once we started looking around! When I saw those prices I immediately went the Craigslist route, but they were still very pricey. Then I remembered a coworker who used to be in triathlons, and sure enough he was willing to sell us his bike for a great price!

The bike came in a package deal that included the road bike, a bike rack for your car, two helmets, a bike tire pump, bike shoes (apparently real triathletes have special clip-in shoes), and two bike tool kits. He threw in some old 1980s road bike that someone had given to his wife, and I was supposed to ride that thing.

Well, long story short– I ended up hugging a concrete mailbox on our first ride after hitting a large crack in the sidewalk. It wasn't a big deal and I wasn't injured at all (except for a bruised ego– thanks to the guy who drove by and honked), but I didn't like the fact that those skinny road bike tires couldn't handle a crack in the sidewalk. Or perhaps the rider just couldn't handle the crack in the sidewalk? Plus it was very uncomfortable to ride a bike in a full forward lean like I was competing in the Tour de France. I mean, I hadn't ridden a bike in 15 years, and that style of bike was way too hardcore for me. This is also why I don't drive a stick-shift car– I don't like extra stress or having to put extra effort into driving or riding a bike.

We decided we were on the right track with the idea of riding bikes, but that I needed a normal, comfortable bike. Naturally I wanted a cute one with the vintage cruiser style that is really popular right now.

I had a couple of requirements in my bike search:

1. Vintage cruiser style (complete with fenders to protect me from puddle splashes)
2. Must have gears so I can shift speeds and try to keep up with husband on his fancy road bike
3. Blue color

Once I decided to get a bike with multiple gears, the prices went up. The husband was a total hero on this one and took over the search while I went hunting with my friends.  He was able to find the perfect bike in my price range at Target for $200. It's a cute teal color with touches of pink. Totally vintage in style, with 7 speeds! I love it!

He gets bonus points for chasing this bike to four different Target stores in DFW to find the a floor model that they were willing to sell. For some reason they wouldn't sell him an un-assembled bike.

So, are you in the market for a super cute bike?

I've rounded up some of my favorite options for cruiser bikes in all price ranges (except the extremely expensive, since that's SO not what we do around here).

Very affordable (single speed)

$88

Affordable

$165, complete with peacock feather detail, 7 speed

$219 (comes in many colors)
A little bit more expensive...

$279, 7 speed

$329

And more expensive...

$410, 6 speed

The one was my favorite, but too pricey:

No price listed, I think the bike shop told us $600+

Of course when you do get a bike, you will need to accessorize!
